Get'n Grounded - Princess Anne, MD

We never used to eat breakfast when traveling, but it seems we are becoming breakfast people after all. Last month, we tried Surf Bagel & Deli and yesterday we found this hidden gem while dropping off our taxes.

We both got the frozen mocha frappe and I got a (warmed) streusel coffee cake muffin.....

Peter ordered an egg & cheese bagel sandwich.

The food is delicious, the atmosphere is great, and the menu looks amazing! We talked about coming back for lunch....soon! (check out their lunch menu online)

They also sell Island Creamery Ice Cream....

as well as Smith Island Cake.

Market Street Inn - Salisbury, MD

Yesterday, Peter and I had a fun day (well, the part about getting our taxes done wasn't all that much fun), but a fun day - shopping, running errands, and a lunch date. We go to Salisbury, MD several times throughout the year and pretty much always eat at the same places: Panera or Olive Garden for lunch and Texas Roadhouse or Outback for dinner. I had checked out TripAdvisor, Yelp, and Urban Spoon for Salisbury restaurant reviews and saw several that looked really good. I mentioned to Peter that we should branch out a bit and try more new places. Peter was on board, and since we were headed to Salisbury for the day yesterday, why not get started on the list?

We chose Market Street Inn and what a great choice it was!

It's a pub/restaurant - we chose the restaurant where there is plenty of indoor seating, and a huge deck outside as well. It was way too cold for lunch on the deck, so I chose the next best thing, a table with a view.

The entire menu looked good, but I ended up ordering one of the lunch specials: a seafood wrap - crab salad with huge pieces of shrimp, a side of Miss Flo's mac & cheese, and a caesar salad. The seafood salad was delish! The crab meat was very fresh. Very tasty! The mac & cheese and salad were good too!

Peter chose the Reuben Sandwich - Slow-roasted corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut on thick sliced rye with 1000 island dressing and mac & cheese as well for his side. He also got a garden salad with Raspberry Walnut Vinaigrette. He raved about the sandwich!

We will definitely return again, next time for dinner - the menu sounds amazing!

(1) ingredient banana ice cream

Mom shared this easy, healthy banana ice cream recipe with me:

Blend frozen bananas in a food processor until creamy. That's it!!!

You could also add a spoonful of peanut butter, a few walnuts, or a little chocolate syrup to the mixture as it blends. This is delicious....and very healthy (ice cream).

Striper Bites - Lewes, DE

During an overnight birthday get-away in Lewes, DE a few weeks ago, we had a chance to have dinner at Striper Bites. I had read tons of restaurant reviews before going, and after narrowing it down to a few that looked really good, I chose Striper Bites for my birthday dinner.

I love the decor and the atmosphere there, and the service was very good.

Peter ordered the Seared Tuna app....
Seared rare with sesame 5-spice crust over crispy wontons, served with spicy mayo, seaweed salad, wasabi, pickled ginger, & soy glaze

For his entree', he chose the special of the day from the fresh fish board:

Blackened Halibut w/Lemon Butter Buerre Blanc and mashed potatoes and salad.

He said everything was delicious!

I decided on the Crab Bisque, which was very good.....

and I knew I was going to get the Lobster Roll before we ever got there.
I had one at Boardwalk Bakery in WDW last month that was out-of-this-world good and I was ready to try another. I also ordered my usual caesar salad.

While it was good, this lobster roll wasn't quite as good as the one I had in Disney....good....just not Disney good. Of course, we were too stuffed for dessert....next time maybe!

Overall, we were both pleased with our meal at Striper Bites and definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Lewes, DE.

Mastering the art of French cooking?

I adore Julia Child and I'm a little obsessed with French food, but French recipes just seem so intimidating. My sister gave me a copy of "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" awhile back and while I marked lots of recipes that I hoped to make, I still haven't mastered any of them. I recently came across this recipe on Pinterest and today I made my first official French dish. It was AMAZING!!

Mini Herbed Pommes Anna

You can find the recipe on Bon Appetit, although, I have tweaked it just a little. Here is my version:

Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter
  • dried rosemary
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 2-3 large potatoes (I used russet- but Yukon Gold were suggested)
  • kosher salt
  • ground black pepper

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 425°. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Drizzle 1/2 teaspoon butter into muffin tin and brush sides generously. Sprinkle each cup with rosemary.
  • Add rosemary and garlic to remaining butter in saucepan. Remove from heat.
  • Slice potatoes into very thin rounds. (Use a mandoline if you have one, otherwise, slice VERY thin.)

  • Layer potato slices in muffin cups. Drizzle remaining butter over potatoes. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

  • Cover pan tightly with foil and place on a baking sheet. Bake until potatoes are fork tender, about 35 minutes. Remove foil; invert a rimmed baking sheet over pan. Turn over and lightly tap, releasing potatoes onto sheet. Using a spatula, carefully turn cakes over and put on platter.
  •
They were delicious! Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. My family raved about them and asked me to make them again....SOON! A simple recipe, yet full of flavor.

"Pommes Anna or Anna potatoes, is a classic French dish of sliced, layered potatoes cooked in a very large amount of melted butter. The recipe calls for firm-fleshed potatoes and butter only. Potatoes are peeled and sliced very thin. The dish is generally credited with having been created during the time of Napoleon III by the chef Adolphe Dugléré, a pupil of Carême, when Dugléré was head chef at the Café Anglais, the leading Paris restaurant of the 19th century, where he reputedly named the dish for one of the grandes cocottes of the period. There is disagreement about which beauty the dish was named after: the actress Dame Judic (real name: Anna Damiens), or Anna DesLions."
